Hurricane Preparation Checklist
Hurricane season is upon us here in Jupiter, so you know what that means! Time to get prepared! Hurricane season kicks off on June 1st and goes through November 30th, so it is CRUCIAL to plan ahead and be proactive. As long-time residents of South Florida, we know that it’s best to stock up on supplies and prepare before there’s word of a potential storm.
Don’t know how to prepare? No worries! We’ve made things easy for you and your family to get ready for the season. Read on for a hurricane preparation checklist!
STOCK UP:
Grocery stores empty out when a storm is on it’s way! It is important to make sure you have everything you need early during Hurricane season. Here is our supply list:
1. Water— one gallon per person per day and enough for at least 3 days
2. Food — at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food
3. Flashlights
4. GENERATOR
5. Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
6. Extra batteries
7. First aid kit
8. At least a 7 day supply of medications and any medical items you may need (ex. hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses)
9. Sanitation and personal hygiene items
10. Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
11. Cell phone with chargers (We recommend portable chargers!)
12. Family and emergency contact information
13. Extra cash
14. Baby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers)
15. Pet supplies (collar, leash, food, carrier, bowl)
16. Extra Blankets and Pillows

What to do before:
Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio so you can get the scoop on the latest conditions.
Check that you have all your hurricane supplies (see list above). Replace or restock if needed.
Bring in items that can be blown away by wind (ex. Bicycles, lawn chairs).
If you have impact glass, close all windows and doors. If you have shutters, close all of them. If you don’t have impact glass or hurricane shutters, board up windows and doors with plywood.
Turn the refrigerator to the coldest setting so your food will last longer in the event of a power outage. Put a few water bottles in your freezer to act as ice packs if the power goes out.
Unplug small appliances and turn off propane tanks.
Make sure you have a full tank of gas in your car.
Evaluate your current flood insurance coverage.
Fill your bathtub with water (this way you will still be able to flush your toilet)
Review Your Home Insurance Policy
Call your insurance to figure out what you have protected.
Take photos of the house before the storm.
Evacuation Plan:
Create an evacuation plan with the members of your household. Be aware of local flood and evacuation areas.
