If your idea of the South Florida dream includes morning walks by the Atlantic, dinner near the water, and being able to head to the beach whenever you feel like it, Palm Beach County probably already has your attention.
Then you start looking at real estate.
Between Palm Beach estates, direct oceanfront condos, and some of South Florida's most recognizable luxury communities, it is easy to assume that living near the beach requires a million-dollar budget.
The reality is much more interesting.
Buyers who are flexible about the type of property they purchase, the coastal community they choose, and whether they need a direct ocean view can uncover a completely different side of Palm Beach County real estate. Condos, smaller beach towns, and properties located across from the ocean can put the South Florida lifestyle within reach at price points that may surprise you.
So, where should you actually look?
One of the first questions we ask buyers is simple: What do you actually want from living near the beach?
Do you need to see the ocean from your living room, or do you care more about being able to grab your beach bag and walk to the sand?
That distinction can make a major difference in your home search.
Direct oceanfront properties will naturally command a premium. Buyers who prioritize beach access over an ocean view can often expand their options by looking across A1A, along the Intracoastal, or within communities that offer deeded beach access.
For a second-home buyer spending winters in Florida, an empty nester ready for a change, or someone who simply wants everyday access to the South Florida lifestyle, that can be a very worthwhile trade-off.
You still get the morning beach walks, afternoons by the water, and easy access to everything that makes coastal Palm Beach County so desirable.
If you have been searching Palm Beach County real estate and haven't looked closely at South Palm Beach, add it to your list.
This small barrier-island community sits between Palm Beach and Manalapan and offers a quieter, residential version of coastal living. Condos make up much of the housing here, which creates opportunities for buyers who care more about location and lifestyle than owning a large single-family home.
South Palm Beach can make particular sense for second-home buyers, future retirees, empty nesters, and anyone looking for a manageable home near the ocean.
You can spend the morning at the beach and still be within easy reach of restaurants, shopping, Palm Beach, Lake Worth Beach, and everything happening throughout the surrounding area.
It is the kind of location that can easily get overlooked when someone begins their search with the biggest names in South Florida real estate, and that is exactly why it is worth knowing about.
A little farther south and west, Lake Worth Beach and Lantana give buyers even more ways to approach coastal Palm Beach County living.
Lake Worth Beach brings personality into the equation. Its downtown, restaurants, arts scene, historic character, and proximity to the ocean make it appealing to buyers who want their Florida lifestyle to extend beyond the beach.
Lantana offers another interesting alternative, particularly for buyers willing to explore different housing styles and locations around the Intracoastal and barrier island.
The larger lesson here is that you don't have to limit your search to the most recognizable ZIP codes.
Sometimes expanding the map by a few miles introduces a community that fits your lifestyle even better.
Northern Palm Beach County offers another version of coastal Florida living.
Juno Beach and Jupiter are major draws for buyers who love the water, boating, outdoor recreation, beaches, restaurants, and the relaxed lifestyle that has made this part of Palm Beach County so desirable.
There is certainly luxury real estate here, but that doesn't mean every property comes with a luxury-estate price tag. Buyers willing to explore condos, smaller residences, and properties away from direct oceanfront locations can still find opportunities.
The key is to start with your lifestyle priorities rather than a rigid picture of what your Florida home is supposed to look like.
For many buyers, a condo is exactly what makes living near the beach realistic.
Think about how you plan to use the property.
If this will be your winter escape, do you really need a large yard and several thousand square feet to maintain while you're away?
If you're downsizing, would you rather spend your weekends maintaining a property or walking to the beach?
If your adult kids will visit, could a two-bedroom condo give you the guest space you need without paying for rooms that sit empty most of the year?
This is where the conversation becomes less about getting the biggest house your budget allows and more about getting the lifestyle you actually want.
Of course, buying a Florida condo comes with its own considerations. Association finances, reserves, insurance, assessments, building condition, rental restrictions, and monthly fees should all be understood before making a decision.
A beautiful kitchen and great location may get your attention. Knowing what you are actually buying helps you make a smart decision.
Instead of opening Zillow and searching exclusively for "oceanfront," try searching around the lifestyle you want.
Someone looking for a seasonal residence may want to explore South Florida condos for second homes. Buyers prioritizing easy ocean access could search for condos with deeded beach access in Palm Beach County. If location and budget are equally important, searches like Palm Beach County condos near the beach, South Palm Beach condos for sale, and two-bedroom condos near the beach in South Florida can uncover very different options.
The same strategy applies when you're working with an agent.
Tell us what you want your life here to look like first. We can work backward from there.
Here is a perfect example of why keeping an open mind matters.
A two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo at 4501 S Ocean Boulevard in South Palm Beach is currently offered at $295,000 and includes deeded beach access, an updated kitchen, newer major systems, and private storage.
That does not mean this particular condo will be the right fit for every buyer, and that is exactly the point.
It shows what can appear when you broaden your search beyond direct oceanfront properties.
Someone who assumed they needed a dramatically larger budget to own a place by the beach may suddenly realize that their Florida plan deserves another look.
When buyers tell us they want to move to Palm Beach County, it is tempting to immediately start talking about bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage.
We would rather start somewhere else.
What do you want your life here to look like?
Maybe you want to spend winters within walking distance of the Atlantic. Maybe you're planning for retirement and want a home that will be easy to maintain. Maybe the kids have moved out and you're ready to trade extra square footage for a better location. Maybe you've simply reached the point where the Florida place you've talked about for years finally feels possible.
Those answers can lead you toward very different communities and properties.
If living near the ocean has been sitting somewhere on your someday list, it may be worth finding out what is actually available before assuming Palm Beach County is outside your budget.
