A Letter to William T. Dwyer High School: Reflecting on My High School Experience in Palm Beach Gardens

University of Florida student and Dwyer alum Sophie Pastor reflects on how William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens prepared her for college, leadership, and life beyond graduation. Her story offers a firsthand look at the opportunities that make Dwyer a standout choice for local and relocating families.

One year ago, I walked across the graduation stage at William T. Dwyer High School and prepared to begin my next chapter at the University of Florida. Now, after completing my first year of college, I've had the opportunity to reflect on just how much Dwyer prepared me for life beyond high school.

When I think about my time at Dwyer, I think about more than classes and assignments. I think about the teachers, counselors, coaches, and staff members who constantly encouraged me to challenge myself and pursue my goals. Their guidance helped me navigate the college application process, build confidence in my abilities, and ultimately earn my place at the University of Florida. Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was to have so many people invested in my success.

For families considering Palm Beach County schools, one of Dwyer's greatest strengths is the support students receive both inside and outside the classroom. The school creates an environment where students are encouraged to explore their interests, set ambitious goals, and prepare for whatever path they choose after graduation.

Academically, Dwyer gave me the foundation I needed to thrive in college. The rigorous coursework taught me how to manage my time, stay organized, communicate effectively, and balance multiple responsibilities at once. When I arrived at UF, I quickly realized that many of the skills I relied on every day had been developed during my years at Dwyer. The school's academic programs challenged me to think critically and prepared me for the expectations of higher education.

Some of my most meaningful experiences happened outside the classroom. Through Student Government, I learned what it means to lead and serve a community as the Class of 2025 Secretary. Through my role as President of Best Buddies, I formed friendships and memories that will stay with me for a lifetime while learning the importance of inclusion and compassion. As a captain of the varsity soccer team, I learned discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. These leadership opportunities and extracurricular activities made my high school experience unforgettable while helping shape the person I am today.

I believe these opportunities are one of the things that make Dwyer special. Students are encouraged to get involved, discover their passions, and build skills that extend far beyond graduation. Whether through athletics, clubs, volunteer organizations, or student leadership, there are countless ways to become part of the school community.

Perhaps the greatest gift Dwyer gave me was the people. Some of my closest friendships began in those hallways, classrooms, and on those fields. The memories we created together at Friday night football games, school events, and everyday moments are the ones I cherish most. Even now, as we all move in different directions, those friendships remain an important part of my life.

Dwyer's location in the heart of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida also creates opportunities for students to become involved in the local community and make connections that extend beyond campus. Being part of such a vibrant and family-oriented area allowed me to participate, lead, and build relationships that have continued into college and beyond.

As I finish my first year at the University of Florida, I can confidently say that William T. Dwyer High School prepared me not only for college but for life. It challenged me academically, supported me personally, and gave me opportunities to grow as a student, leader, athlete, and friend.

For students preparing to start high school and for families relocating to Palm Beach Gardens or the surrounding Palm Beach County communities, I hope my experience offers a glimpse into what makes Dwyer such a meaningful place to learn and grow. My years there helped shape who I am today, and I know the lessons, friendships, and experiences I gained will continue to impact me for years to come.

Thank you, Dwyer, for the lessons, the friendships, the opportunities, and the memories. They continue to shape me long after graduation.

With gratitude,

Sophie Pastor
