What Is Jupiter, Florida Known For? 10 Things That Define It

Beaches, boating, the lighthouse, spring training and the golf clubs that made Jupiter famous.

Short answer: Jupiter, Florida is known for its beaches, its boating, the red-brick Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and spring training baseball, plus some of the best golf and waterfront communities in the state. It's also become a magnet for pro athletes and a hub for scientific research, all in a town of about 61,000 people at the northern tip of Palm Beach County. Here's what puts Jupiter on the map.

1. The Beaches

Jupiter has about 3.4 miles of town beaches with 22 public crossovers, and the water here is some of the clearest on Florida's east coast. Locals split their time between Jupiter Beach Park by the inlet, Carlin Park and the Jupiter dog beach, a 2.5-mile stretch where dogs are welcome on the sand.

2. The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse

Built in 1860, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is the town's signature landmark. You can climb to the top for views of the inlet and the ocean, and the lighthouse sits in a 120-acre protected natural area with trails and a museum run by the Loxahatchee River Historical Society.

3. Boating and the Inlet

Jupiter is one of the best boating towns in Florida. The Jupiter Inlet gives quick access to the Gulf Stream, the Intracoastal and the Loxahatchee River are lined with waterfront homes and restaurants, and the sandbar near the inlet is a weekend tradition. Every December, the Holiday Boat Parade ends right at the lighthouse. Buying on the water? Start with our guide for boaters buying in Jupiter.

4. Spring Training

Every February and March, the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins play spring training games at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Abacoa. The stadium also hosts minor league baseball, so there's a game in town for much of the year.

5. Golf and Pro Athletes

Jupiter is home to some of the most exclusive golf clubs in the country, including The Bear's Club, founded by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus. Private clubs, privacy and easy access to training facilities have made Jupiter a favorite for professional athletes. We wrote about it in why the world's top athletes call Jupiter home.

6. Waterfront Dining

Locals plan their weekends around the water. Love Street by the inlet, Harbourside Place on the Intracoastal and the restaurants along the Jupiter Riverwalk serve up sunset views, fresh fish and live music most nights of the week.

7. Parks and Nature

Beyond the beach, Riverbend Park covers about 645 acres of trails and paddling along the Loxahatchee River, and Jonathan Dickinson State Park is just north of town. Both are only minutes from I-95.

8. Science and Research

Jupiter is home to The Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Florida Atlantic University's Jupiter campus, which houses the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College.

9. A-Rated Schools

Every graded traditional public school serving Jupiter earned an A in the latest Florida school grades, including Jupiter Community High, Jupiter Middle and Independence Middle. Jupiter High's Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy draws students from across the county.

10. Waterfront and Club Communities

From the oceanfront village of Jupiter Inlet Colony to deepwater estates in Admirals Cove and golf living at Jupiter Country Club, Jupiter's neighborhoods cover a wide range of lifestyles and price points. For the full lineup, see the best neighborhoods in Jupiter.
